The wargame that teaches wargaming, from the network that trains the professionals
Take That Hill, a digital adaptation of Fight Club International’s tabletop primer, launches 6 August on Windows and Android, with macOS and iOS coming soon
ELGIN, SCOTLAND, 6 AUGUST 2026. Hunted Cow Games and HexWar Games today announced that Take That Hill, the official digital adaptation of the tabletop wargame licensed from Fight Club International, launches on 6 August 2026 for Windows and Android at $19.99. Versions for macOS and iOS are coming soon.
Hex-and-counter wargames carry a reputation for dense rulebooks and decades of assumed knowledge. Take That Hill! was built as a deliberate answer to that: a primer from Fight Club International, the global wargaming network whose membership spans serving military, the defence industry and the games industry. This digital edition brings that same one-problem, twenty-minute introduction to PC, Mac and mobile.
Players command an infantry platoon of three sections and a Platoon HQ, attacking an enemy section dug in on a hill 500 metres away across open ground with no cover from view or fire. The hill is taken by fire and manoeuvre: pin the defenders, move under covering fire, close to assault. Sixteen turns. Take the hill as fast as possible while keeping casualties to a minimum: commanders must balance a rapid but potentially reckless advance against a cautious, methodical approach.
Reach the hill inside ten for a clean victory; from turn eleven, a draw is the best on offer.
Its IGO-UGO turn structure introduces the mechanics used across most commercial wargames: alternating sides, action economy, dice-driven fire, line of fire, suppression, morale and rally. Once those land, advanced rules layer on fire support, minefields, barbed wire, hidden depth positions that may or may not be real, 120mm mortars, and low-light attacks that offer opportunities to close on the hill unseen, offset by the risks of illumination and the confusion darkness can cause among troops.
A full expansion scenario, Paratrooper Raid, drops players behind enemy lines on the eve of a major offensive with one night to destroy a command-and-control node. You come down in darkness with only your platoon commander on the board and gather the rest of your force from the drop zone as the garrison strengthens and dawn approaches. Getting in is half of it. Every section has to make it back to the wood line.
“Most of what we build at HexWar is for people who wargame professionally, and the thing that always strikes us is how small the gap really is between a serious training tool and a good game. Take That Hill sits right on that line. It’s a proper wargame, but it will teach you the whole vocabulary in twenty minutes, and then hand you the advanced rules when you’re ready for them. If you’ve ever looked at a hex map and thought ‘that’s not for me’, this is the one to start with.”
Keith Martin-Smith, Director, HexWar Games
Take That Hill launches 6 August 2026 at 10:00 BST for Windows and Android at $19.99 (regional pricing applies). Versions for macOS and iOS are coming soon.
